Thomas Gillaspy: Windows

William Blake wrote, “If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.” Thomas Gillaspy loved Blake’s quote and believed that the best art interrogated perceived boundaries and expanded dimensions and capacities for perception.

Thomas believed that—while technology expands our abilities to connect and communicate, ironically, many of us have grown more insular, isolating ourselves in our respective homes and neighborhoods, offices and cubicles. Ultimately, he believed that the expansive potential of art could not only influence thought and emotion, but also, connection and communication. He believed that art unified dualities, oppositions, and preconceived contradictions.

In an interview, Thomas states, “I believe that architecture is our attempt to create order in the urban environment. In my work, I love to discover forms, patterns, repetitions, and geometries in the most unexpected places.” In his photos, even simple archetypal lines, shapes, and colors convey significant psychic weight and complexity.

This exhibit, “Windows.” explores the complex and paradoxical nature of the window. Like doors, windows function as apertures as well as enclosures, provide transparency as well as mirror-like reflection, unite interiority with externality. Windows allow us to see through surfaces, expand vision, and encounter new perceptions.
