Nicholas Blair: Castro to Christopher – Gay Streets of America 1979 – 1986

Folsom St., San Francisco, 1984 (2974.32)

Nicholas is fascinated by how the camera sees and transforms the three-dimensional world into a two-dimensional image. Although the photograph meticulously describes what the camera sees and is documentary by nature, it also becomes an illusion that invokes ambiguity and a fictional interpretation of events. He is interested in how these two aspects of photography intersect and, if successful, create a visual poem that is both tied to and divorced from the original occurrence.

In the late 70’s, He became aware that a unique and influential social movement was sweeping the Castro Neighborhood of San Francisco and began taking pictures. When visiting New York City, he also photographed the gay scene on Christopher Street. In 1982, the Bay Area Reporter offered him a weekly photography feature titled From Castro to Christopher, which ran for two years and eventually led to a 160-page monograph titled Castro to Christopher, Gay Streets of America, 1979—1986, published in 2023 by powerHouse Books. This exhibition is derived from that collection.
