Nature Photography Workshop: Effie Yeaw Nature Center and Nature Study Area

Join internationally recognized nature photographer, Lewis Kemper, for this two-part Nature Photography Workshop at the beautiful Effie Yeaw Nature Center and Nature Study Area. The Effie Yeaw Nature Center is a 100-acre nature preserve featuring interpretive trails that meander through the riparian woodlands along the American River. Besides beautiful views of the river and oak forest, we will have the opportunity to photograph deer, coyotes, raptors, waterfowl, and wild turkeys.

The Effie Yeaw Nature Center is a 100-acre nature preserve featuring interpretive trails that meander through the riparian woodlands along the American River. Besides beautiful views of the fog-enshrouded river and oak forest, we will have the opportunity to photograph deer, coyotes, raptors, waterfowl, and wild turkeys. Winter should provide us with a foggy sunrise, bringing atmosphere and mood to our images.

The workshop begins via ZOOM on Friday, May 13 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a two-hour evening presentation on composition and light, an introduction to the nature center, and wildlife photo techniques.

Instruction continues on Sunday morning, May 15 in the Nature Study Area with a sunrise field session. The group will meet at 6:15 a.m. in the parking lot of Effie Yeaw Nature Center (The Effie Yeaw Nature Center is located inside the Ancil Hoffman County Park: 2850 San Lorenzo Way [off Tarshes Drive] Carmichael CA 95608). After several hours of photography, the group will break for lunch and then reconvene at Viewpoint for a critique session from 2-4:30 p.m.

During the lunch break, you will have time to do a quick edit and select some images to share during the critique.  Pick five to six images of your best and five to six you may have questions about. Bring these images on a flash drive when you return to Viewpoint.  If you live far away or don’t have a laptop, you can return to Viewpoint at 12:30 p.m., meet Lewis there, and use his laptop to do your quick edit.

During the critique session, you and your fellow photographers will concentrate on aspects of composition, photo technique, and post-processing to enhance your images.
